Kindergarten at Leila Day

Our group of eighteen children is staffed by a team of three teachers and one part-time assistant. Together we cover the extended day, which stretches from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., year round. Our classroom and our play yard have been designed to create a stimulating environment, which encourages children to make choices about what and how they learn. Our daily schedule includes opportunities for children to work and play as individuals and together in small groups. There are also times for the group to come together as a whole and opportunities for more teacher-directed activities as well.  All meals and snacks are provided.

We offer a wide range of experiences to enhance self-expression, social awareness, and cognitive exploration. The materials we use to achieve these goals include a range of art media, sensory materials such as sand and water, kitchen equipment for cooking, and a workbench and tools for carpentry. There are blocks and props for building and dramatic play. Music and movement are integrated into the daily routine of kindergarten along with books, stories, poems, and creative writing in many forms. There are also manipulative math materials, games and puzzles, and a great many tools and pieces of equipment to assist in scientific explorations.

Through the year, many investigations occur as they arise from interests brought to class and developed by children and teachers. Within the context of these explorations, children develop skills along with a love of learning. With a sense of discovery and the opportunity to make an impact on their environment, the children gain an understanding of who they are as individuals, members of our class, and of the larger school community.
